Gina Farrell
BRINGING HAWAIIAN COLOURS TO CORNISH HARBOURS!
As well as this being a one woman exhibition the year also marks the artists 40th birthday!
Hence this exhibition will be somewhat autobiographical. As well as showing her much loved harbour scenes this will be a RARE chance to view some of Gina's work from her twenties including late 1990's sketches of her travels through Asia.
Tree hugging Chienise people, busy bee Japenese people, and beautifully executed drawings of "Dancers In Motion"
Having moved from London to Polperro in Cornwall when she was 14, she instatlly fell in love with this quaint little fishing village.
"WHILE MY GIRLFRIENDS IN LONDON WHERE GETTING INTO FASHION AND NIGHT CLUBS MY CORNISH GIRLFRIENDS HAD THEIR OWN FISHING BOATS. I ALSO LEARNT TO SURF. IT WAS LIKE ANOTHER WORLD"!
After studying at Falmouth School of Art she had her own thriving studio by Polperro harbour but soon went on to work as an artist and teacher in many countries including Hong Kong, Japan, Hawaii and Switzerland and recently returned to live in her childhood haunt Polperro. It's certainly true that her travels have influenced her work a great deal as depicted in her unusual colour scheme for traditional cornish harbours. Using a self developed layering technique of painting Gina says
"I WANT TO CATCH A VIBRANCY OF COLOURS I FOUND IN HAWAII AND ENTWINE THEM INTO HARBOUR PAINTINGS AND SO TRANSFORM TRADITIONAL HARBOUR SCENES INTO MODERN, BOLD STRIKING WORKS OF ART. MY MEDIUM IS DEFINITELY OIL PAINT, AS IT'S PLYABLE, YOU CAN MANIPULATE IT AND CREATE A DEPTH OF COLOUR THAT I HAVN'T FOUND WITH ANY OTHER MEDIUM. THE ONLY DOWNSIDE IS THE DRYING TIME! I ALSO USE OIL PASTELS WHICH ARE GREAT FUN TO WORK WITH, AND WHEN I FEEL REALLY SPONTANEOUS I USE ACRYLICS"
Her favourite artists are the three late west country artists Alfred Wallis, Beryl Cook and Polperro's Tom Morton and much of her inspiration is found in the early morning while walking her little jack russell by Polperro's beautiful harbour
"EVERYDAY IS DIFFERENT. THERE'S NEW LIGHT, NEW TIDES AND ALWAYS SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL TO CAPTURE"As she said in a recent interview with Martin Ballie on BBC Radio Cornwall "PAINTING IS ALL I REALLY WANT TO DO AND CORNWALL IS WHERE I WANT TO DO IT!"
A few weeks ago she opened a new studio of her own work. Called "GINA'S ART STUDIO" it can be found by the harbour in Polperro right next to the old roman bridge. Here she paints several days a week and both locals and holiday makers alike are always welcome to pop in for a chat and to view her work.
"
IN AN EVER CHANGING AND UNCERTAIN WORLD BE SURE TO STOP AND ENJOY THE COLOURS THAT SURROUND YOU. ALSO DON'T FORGET TO LOOK UP AS THE COLOURS IN THE SKY ARE ALWAYS MOVING AND LIKE THE REST OF THE WORLD BE IT SLOW OR FAST, FOREVER CHANGING!"
.AN EXHIBITION NOT TO BE MISSED!.
