‘Here I feel a strong physical and mental connection with the land and the elements, the present and the past. My paintings reflect the combination of thoughts – real and imaginary visions, conscious and subconscious, experience and memory and a balance between nature and human presence.
Inspiration for my recent work has evolved out of a combination of impressions and ideas.
One was a recent trip to Australia, where there was the opportunity to experience new and traditional indigenous art.
Another was working with collaged shapes of brightly coloured papers creating abstract images and forms to work from, which had an influence on the way I saw the surrounding landscape whilst out walking. In bright light the ploughed fields and dunes became flattened blocks of colour with interesting shapes, often juxtaposed against the sea and sky. The abstracted figures introduce a narrative element into the work, their timeless presence, heavy with a sense of being, are held within the light filled landscape each with their own story to tell.’
