Oil & watercolour landscapes & coastal.
I work mainly in oils in a representational, impressionistic style endeavouring to put on canvas the beauty of the countryside and coast that is Cornwall. I have painted most of my life but only professionally since retiring from my police career in 1994. My aim is always to paint light rather than objects and that is a constant challenge. Perhaps, because of my background, what you see is what you get – there are no hidden messages. I hope you enjoy this exhibition of Cornwall on Canvas.
Biography
Born 1944 in Gillingham, Kent.
Between 1961 and 1973 i was a police officer and detective in East End of London then briefly at Scotland Yard before moving to Cornwall and rejoining the Police from 1973 to 1994. From 1986 to 1992 I was the local Police Inspector.
It was on moving to St Ives in 1973 that I developed my interest in painting as a serious hobby and began exhibiting locally. In 1976 I was invited to join the St Ives Society of Artists. I then continued to paint as my career took me around the South West and during the eighties I began to exhibit in Brittany as well.
On retiring from the police I opened the Waterfront Gallery in Penzance but after 18 months was bought out by Peter de Savary and so opted to paint professionally from my new home at Tresowes Green, near Praa Sands.
In the last 18 years I have continued to exhibit my work in Brittany and the South West as well as a one man show aboard the residential cruise liner The World while moored at Greenwich in 2005. This resulted in a number of sales including a large painting of Old Penzance Harbour for £7500 which hangs in the luxury apartment of Mr Tsutsumi as the ship circles the globe.
I continue to paint from my home studio at Tresowes Green and regularly teach.
Whilst I have never received any real teaching in painting I have had the benefit of some tuition with artist Steven Waugh and have long studied the work and teachings of such as Ken Howard, Tom Coates, Peter Wileman and David Curtis.
