Figurative seascapes & landscapes oil/acrylics 2013 is my year of painting water. Opening in February and finishing in December, the show, titled SPLASH!, features rough seas, calm seas, peaceful inland lakes and gushing waterfalls on canvas and board. Sometimes my work depicts sail boats, swimmers, fishermen and surfers but water is the common denominator. Working in or under water is very challenging. In these situations, sketching is impossible so I rely on the underwater camera to capture the moment and more importantly, what the Japanese call ‘the inner eye’. I’ve swum with seals, capsized in sailing dinghies and been tossed about by the wave. This year’s specialisation has been tremendous fun and I hope to continue with it in the future. www.pennyrumble.com

— There are a thousand ways to kneel and kiss the earth - Rumi — A mixed exhibition of work from Lands End Guild of Artists members Claire Lucas, Sara Bevan and Lisa Lucas. Established in early 2011 with the aim of generating a supportive community and forum for discussion for artists in far West Penwith, Lands End Guild of Artists is a small group of ten professional artists and craftspeople living and working in the wild and windswept tip of West Cornwall. Guild members create entirely original artwork reflecting quality and excellence. Claire Lucas has lived by the sea for most of her life, a recurring theme in her work is the line where land and sea meet – that part of the land that is sometimes above water, sometimes below it, carved and caressed by the changing moods of the ocean. Claire works with oil pastels out in the landscape when the weather permits or in her studio with oil paints on canvas and board. For her, the creation of this artwork is a means of celebrating the beauty and sacredness of the natural world. Sara Bevan’s paintings range from large canvases to small works on board in a variety of techniques and mediums including oils, acrylics and mixed media. Her paintings are an emotional response to the land and sea around her, always dramatic, always with passion. Paintings by Lisa Lucas focus on details within a landscape, her work tends to be abstract with a botanical theme conveying the feelings of a moment, a fleeting glimpse. As a printmaker she combines various techniques including blind embossing and chine collé. Enjoying a painterly approach to printmaking she creates colourful monotypes resulting in unique and original images.
Oil & watercolour landscapes & coastal. I work mainly in oils in a representational, impressionistic style endeavouring to put on canvas the beauty of the countryside and coast that is Cornwall. I have painted most of my life but only professionally since retiring from my police career in 1994. My aim is always to paint light rather than objects and that is a constant challenge. Perhaps, because of my background, what you see is what you get – there are no hidden messages. I hope you enjoy this exhibition of Cornwall on Canvas. Biography Born 1944 in Gillingham, Kent. Between 1961 and 1973 i was a police officer and detective in East End of London then briefly at Scotland Yard before moving to Cornwall and rejoining the Police from 1973 to 1994. From 1986 to 1992 I was the local Police Inspector. It was on moving to St Ives in 1973 that I developed my interest in painting as a serious hobby and began exhibiting locally. In 1976 I was invited to join the St Ives Society of Artists. I then continued to paint as my career took me around the South West and during the eighties I began to exhibit in Brittany as well. On retiring from the police I opened the Waterfront Gallery in Penzance but after 18 months was bought out by Peter de Savary and so opted to paint professionally from my new home at Tresowes Green, near Praa Sands. In the last 18 years I have continued to exhibit my work in Brittany and the South West as well as a one man show aboard the residential cruise liner The World while moored at Greenwich in 2005. This resulted in a number of sales including a large painting of Old Penzance Harbour for £7500 which hangs in the luxury apartment of Mr Tsutsumi as the ship circles the globe. I continue to paint from my home studio at Tresowes Green and regularly teach. Whilst I have never received any real teaching in painting I have had the benefit of some tuition with artist Steven Waugh and have long studied the work and teachings of such as Ken Howard, Tom Coates, Peter Wileman and David Curtis. My work can be viewed on my website www.cornwalloncanvas.com and on Facebook www.facebook.com/TonyShorthouse
